CBT

What does CBT involve?

Have a look at our CBT page, and follow links for further information. Briefly, the CBT consists of a series of 'elements' designed to prepare you for riding on the road on your own.

How long does CBT take?

As long as it takes! The course is structured in such a way as to allow completion in one day - but this obviously depends on the individual.

Do I have to do a theory test?

At present, you don't need to pass a theory test in order to take a CBT. There are plans to change this in the future.

Can I use my own bike for CBT?

Yes, if: you have a current CBT certificate and are renewing before your existing certificate expires; AND your bike is legal (insurance, tax and MOT if applicable); AND your insurance policy covers you whilst under tuition (give them a call to make sure, and get it in writing if you can!).

If I do my CBT on an automatic/moped, can I ride a 125/geared bike on my certificate?

Currently, yes - as long as you are 17 or over (to ride any bike greater than 50cc). This will be changing in future - your certificate will be valid only for the type of machine you have taken the CBT on (auto/manual).

I've lost my CBT certificate!

Give us a call, we can provide you with a duplicate of your certificate (at a cost of £20.00).

I passed my driving test in 1968/1983/1999, do I need to do a CBT?

If you passed your driving test before February 1st 2001, you do not need to complete CBT if you want to ride a moped (50cc). For anything bigger, you do need to complete CBT.

TEST

How long will it take to get my full licence?

This depends on your experience/ability, and test availability. If you have been riding regularly on a CBT for a few years, our standard course should be fine for you.

Can I get my licence in a week?

Whilst technically possible, we prefer not to book both modules of the practical test in the same week. If anything goes wrong at module one (and that could be a cancelled test, we don't just mean an unsuccessful attempt!) there is not enough time left for us to change your module two test - resulting in a loss of the module two test fee (and possibly training costs, too).

Do you do the mod one yourself?

No, module one is taken at the test centre by an examiner.

I've passed my mod one, what can I ride?

The module one alone gives you no additional entitlement over your CBT.

My licence says I already have category A entitlement?

Unless you have completed CBT, passed a motorcycle theory test and two part practical test, you do not have a full motorcycle licence. Check the final column for category A on your licence, it will say 79(tri) or 79(3) - this means you are restricted to riding a tricycle (until you have passed your bike test, of course).

What do the different categories mean? Which one should I be taking a test for?

It all looks much more complicated than it needs to! If you are 24 or over, you want to take the category A - full, unrestricted. If you are 19-23, and you can't wait until you're 24, you will take category A2 - standard (this restricts you to 35kW, or approx. 46.6 BHP). If you are 21 and have held a full category A2 licence for 2 years, you can take both modules again to get your licence upgraded to category A. There is one little anomaly regarding the A2 upgrade - if you reach the age of 24 before having held the A2 licence for 2 years, you can still take both modules again to upgrade, but you will also need to retake your theory (or wait until the 2 years have passed!), and pass module two within 6 months of passing module one. You are, of course, able to take a test for a lower category if you wish - just bear in mind that there is always a chance that the 125cc bike you're happy with now might give you the bug to 'go bigger': why go through the process twice?
